All atomic nuclei lighter than iron have a tendency to give up mass as energy when they fuse, while all atomic nuclei heavier than iron have a tendency to give up mass as energy when they split up. The first kind of nuclear reaction is called "fusion", while the second kind of nuclear reaction is called "fission". A typical thermonuclear bomb actually uses both processes, first using an uranium or plutonium fission reaction to produce sufficient temperatures and pressures to induce a fusion reaction inside a core containing hydrogen atom isotopes.
With iron nuclei, it's difficult to produce a nuclear reaction either way, which is why it's often considered the "final elemental end stage" in stellar nuclear synthesis. We see a lot of free-floating iron in outer space.

Nuclear power is not fusion miss predicted A in science. Nuclear power plants are splitting atoms, that would be fission. Fission is the splitting of atoms creating smaller atoms and a release of energy. Fusion is the stuff dreams are made of, it is the "perfect" energy source, the one that we cannot reliably reproduce in laboratory conditions. It is the reaction that you witness when you look up at the sun.
And Georgie, all reactors are fission. There are no functioning fusion reactors yet. There are some prototypes that are playing with plasma physics to produce fusion, but none are in operation yet.

Fission is when you bombard the nucleus of an atom with subatomic particles in order to break down the atom and cause a nuclear reaction. Fusion is when you compress two ot more atoms together until, basically, something gives....and its a lot more dangerous and produces a lot more energy than fission. Most nuclear reactors use fission.

They're opposites. Fusion means "coming together."
And fision is the oppposite "splitting apart"
Nuclear Power is fusion. Hence the term "Nuclear Fusion."

Bottom line: Fission is contained nuclear power as in the nuclear plants. Fusion is a nuclear bomb and can be millions of degrees and con not be contained by anything man-made.
