I moved into a house with my boyfriend and 2 roommates in May. We live in a 2 family house and there are a group of young guys living in the other apartment. We have to tell them to lower their music at least 5 times a week.At first they would lower it when we knocked on their door. Then the next day it would be up again.

It is getting worse and worse. Now they refuse to answer their doors and will sometimes lower it if we bang on the walls. A lot of the time they will bang back and just put it on louder.

We have contacted the landlord numerous times and he claims to have talked to them, but there has been no change.

We have threatened to call the cops on them. We are pretty sure they are here illegally. The music is never in english and only one of the group speaks english. We are afraid that if we call the cops they will retaliate or somehow try to get us back and we are afraid. What can we do? What can the police do? There is nothing in our lease about loud music.

There is no way to contact the police anonymously. We are in a 2 familiy home and there are no other neighbors very close by. We go over to the other apartment almost every day so they would know that it is us.

They seem very violent and angry which makes us scared.

If we contact the police, can we do it anonymously so they dont come to our door first?

The police will warn them a couple of times and then cite them for disturbing the peace. You have a right to quiet enjoyment of your home. We had some teens move in down the block. They had parties every Friday and Saturday night. Their next door neighbors called the police several times, and the parties have stopped.

Call the police and make a noise complaint. Do it every time and make sure there is a police report.

The landlord owes you "quiet enjoyment" of your apartment. That means, he must do what he can to control the illegal behavior of other tenants. If you present him with police reports and he does not take action to evict these guys, then you may choose to terminate your own lease and move.

This is generally the way the law works, but you should talk to a landlord-tenant attorney in your state before you decide to break your lease.

Call the police. I have. They will come over and talk to them.

You've been very nice. The police need to get involved.

It worked with my neighbors. They scattered.
Actually, I went over to them first and asked them to lower the volume. They said ok. But then one had a smart mouth and called me a b.... I turned around and let him have it. I called the police. They drink and throw their cans in our yard. I reported that as well. They don't even belong there. They are friends of the neighbor's adult sons. They hang out in the road near our house. They block the road with their cars.

Seriously, you should call the police. Don't feel bad either.
The police where I live are decent. They seem to have common sense. :)

Can't live in fear. Call the cops, not only do you call the cops, but call them EVERY single time it happens. Trust me when I tell you, cops will put a quick end to their little music game.

They do not like being called out numerous times to the same place for the same infraction. You must stay strong and make sure to call whenever the music gets too loud.

Call the cops anyway. How will they know it was you who called them? The cops will just knock on the door and ask them to turn it down. If they are called three times, like in my city, a fine is given.
