'Cause cars were slow then. They only had one cylinder and ran on whale oil, which was expensive, smelly and left serious sludge deposits in the engines. Cruising speed was 2 miles per hour. It was cheaper, faster and quieter to walk.

The main problem was that they hadn't invented gasoline.
You've got to feel sorry for the guy's with the 18th century Fords looking all shiny but going nowhere while the guys with the horses were getting around on a mixture of hay, oats, water and carrots.

Because they would have had to have pulled them around with horses still...they didn't have car engines at the time :)
