I'm assuming they're leather. Put some clothing detergent and a little bit of steaming hot water together (you can stop up the sink for that, or use a basin), dip a toothbrush into it, and get to work on your shoes. Always works for me. And FYI, bleach doesn't turn shoes yellow. You can even add some bleach to the hot water/detergent mixture, they'll be sparkling white! After you clean with the toothbrush, wipe with a wet rag, and then a dry paper towel. Voila!

Most sports stores and big shoe chains like Champs or Foot locker carry a special shoe cleaner that is made for athletic shoes and will not turn them yellow. I think it is almost $10, but it is designed specifically for keeping them clean. Aside of that, I always was able to use dial or softsoap and a toothbrush, if it wasn't a leather part of the shoe. Just be careful not to get the leather wet. I would also highly recommend using a spray conditioner on the leather that will protect it and keep it clean, but you need to do that right away (when they are new) before you wear them.

I use a toothbrush, toothpast, and soap in a bowl. Here is my mix 1/3water, 1/3 toothpast, and 1/3 soap. Swish it around really well and once it's mixed, add a capful of vinegar. Mix again. Then use the toothbrush to apply it to your shoe. Works great and keeps shoes white and sparkly.

I would say if you have any cleaning products especially the new clorox with bleach it works wonders and a scrub brush and some hot water.... I do it all the time.

Whites will turn yellow if you use too much bleach. It burns the fabric. I wash mine all the time with no problems.
