Tony, it's odd that you would use the years they didn't win the World Series as the reasons why Cashman is the best.

I'll use the fact that he built an offensive powerhouse, in lieu of pitching, as the reason why he ISN'T the best. Who cares how many runs you score if your pitching let's up more?

What do you mean he needs to start focusing on getting the team more on track??? He won 2 World Series in the past 4 seasons.

Theo is the best in baseball - as the answerer before me said - the best general manager in sports is Bill Belichick.

He may have been born in New York, but he was raised just a few miles outside on Fenway Park and attended Brookline High School. Is that enough to make him worthy to be Boston's GM according to you?

But yes he is one of the best GM's in baseball. He knows baseball and he knows that team chemistry is a huge part of a WS team. He knows what he needs to do to get the job done.

Theo Epstein and Scott Pioli are the 2 best GM's in sports.

I know he was born in New York, but he isn't the best in sports. The best GM in sports is Brian Cashman, recruiting a great 2000-2007 offensive powerhouse, that all teams worried about pitching against. Theo Epstein is more of a baseball thinker. He would make a great manager, let alone being the GM of the 2007 Championship Red Sox.

Theo Epstein has more of a mind for baseball and he needs to start focusing more on getting the team a little more in track.

Any GM whose team just won the world series has to be considered the best...at the moment...who cares where he was born what does that have to do with being a good GM

He's not that good. Just look at this year alone. JD drew was well over paid and all sox fans thought that before his crap season. Dice-k is an over-rated B- pitcher. Lugo is terrible and almost all the relievers we got in the off season other than oki were junk. And don't even get me started on gagne. All in all I think he's slightly above average as a GM.

As a Yankee fan, I have to admit that Theo Einstein has done a pretty damn good job.

But as others have said, it's hard to judge a GM who has so much money to work with. Guys who can get competitive teams in small markets are a lot more impressive IMO.

With the payroll Mark Shapiro has to work with in Cleveland - and the little room for error he has when acquiring players - the best GM is currently in the executive offices at Jacobs Field.

It's hard to tell - he's not incompetent, like far too many General Managers are. However, it's hard to judge his actual abilities when he's heading up a team that has the 2nd-highest payroll in the sport. When you've got that, you should be making it to the playoffs fairly consistently. It's the GM's who are successful with half that money that have really proven their worth.
