Example:

Patriots fan - "We will trounce the Redskins this weekend".

Redskins fan - "We will play hard and maybe eke out a win"

Clearly, the less true of the comments would be considered "trash", since it is untrue, worthless. The true comment ,while abrasive, is true and has face value.

So, we could say that Colts fans claiming "We might win" would be trash talk while Pats fans accurately predicting "The Colts will be absolutely humiliated on Sunday by the Patriots running up the score and finishing them off by halftime" would not be.

Trash talk- to use disparraging or boastful language

So your definition of "trash talk" would be something like, Bill Belichick is a lying, cheating, worthless, classless, sorry excuse for a human being piece of elephant feces.
While that might be a tad bit abrasive, the comments are all true!!
How fast will the Patriot fans change their minds on the whole "running up the score" incident if the Colts put 50 up on the scoreboard Sunday, while the Pats are unable to score, and most of those points coming late in the 4th with all their starters in?

I am a Pats fan, and I also think they will win this weekend. But what you are doing right now is trash talking. Anything negative being said about another team is trash talking. Saying "we might win" is just hopeful thinking. Sorry

You are on the right track. When the pats fans say that they will score any points at all, it's not so much trash talk as it is delusional. When the colts say that Manning will make the pats D his personal whipping post, that is just not trash talk, just a statement of fact.

Trash talk is stupid, and so is anyone who thinks the Patsies will beat the Colts on Sunday.

The above statement is trash talk, which is still stupid. I just wanted to give an example.

Outcome of the game has no relevance in trash talk. It just helps backup the gloating. Trash talk is like...

"BAGSOFSWAGS is so fat, I swerved to miss him on the road and ran out of gas."

making bold predictions does not qualify as trash talking. Its just mere speculation.

Describing somones play, ie. you play like a one armed grandmother, would be a better example of trash talking.

Even though I agree with your assessment of the Patriots, you would fail a Logic class...
