AARGH! You want inexpensive fabric and good patterns, not cheap, shoddy fabric and poorly put together patterns.

Cheap fabric will often fight you every step of the way, and will never look good. Inexpensive but on-grain or properly knit fabrics will look much better, wear longer, and sew better.

May I suggest the KwikSew books for your kids patterns needs? They have the basic patterns for all the pieces, sewing instructions and ideas for changing patterns to create various designs. The patterns go together very well, unlike some of the "regular patterns" from the Big 4. http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/Book_Children.cfm (there are other titles). If you choose to buy a used copy, make sure there are "master patterns" with it. You'll trace the patterns on tissue paper or thin interfacing or something similar in order to use them. When you get a little more experience, you might consider trying Jalie or Ottobre patterns.

If you're not used to buying fabric, try to find stuff that's at least as nice as ready-to-wear fabric -- many "bargain" fabrics have been coated with a lot of sizing to "improve" their hand, but the sizing washes out and you've got a limp mess. I'm lucky to have a number of good independent fabric stores around, some with very good prices, but I realize not all areas are anywhere near as lucky. There are some good internet retailers around, and also fabric co-ops -- find a good coop with someone who knows fabrics and you'll have someone capable of selecting nice stuff in the first place, and usually able to look at a pattern and tell you if the coop fabric you're considering would be suitable.

Other places to pick up good but inexpensive fabric (and notions) include thrift stores like GoodWill or Salvation Army. You might find donations of fabric (some of it very nice stuff!) or look through the racks for "fabric that is in disguise" -- one of my very favorite blouses started with a new cotton dress from a very good maker that someone had popped the zipper on. There was plenty of fabric in it for a blouse for me (and I'm not small!), plus trim for several other projects for the princely sum of $1. I probably would have had to pay about $30/yard for fabric of that quality.

When I was sewing for my girls I looked for versatile patterns that had a lot of options for changing things like lengths, collars, sleeve styles and sizes. Then I traced the sizes I needed for cutting onto tissue paper so that I could reuse the patterns. There's a lost you can do with fabric and small changes in style to make each piece different to reflect the individual child.

If you have a Hobby Lobby in town, that is the best place for inexpensive fabrics. Michael's does NOT carry fabric and patterns, Jo-Ann's is very expensive and Wal-Mart has decided to pull fabric and patterns from all but 10% of their stores nationwide(thank you Wal-mart..sarcasm there). another good place is Ebay...just watch the shipping cost. Marshall dry goods and fabrics from the heart are both good sellers to look at on ebay. Also, be sure to check out Hancock Fabrics on line store...they sometimes have pretty good sales on fabrics.

Get on the mailing list at Jo-Ann fabric. Every few weeks you will get a mailer with a 45% coupon, and sometimes there are more coupons inside. You can often get your fabric for half price. Join the American Sewing Guild and you will get 10% off everything you buy at Jo-Anns.

Shop at closeout and salvage stores. Some of them have a great fabric department. Enjoy your new hobby!

For great quality fabric for a price that is hard to beat check out the bargain section of www. fabricshack.com online. They constantly release fabrics for $3.98/yard from major fabric companies. Another great source is look into Ebay, especially for bundles, or scraps...you can get yards and yards for projects (but you do have to be willing to look often and to bid, but many can be bought for about 2.00/yard or less if you aren't really set on any specific fabric... this is also a great place to find patterns for much less than you can get in store... Patterns used or bought and stored but never used are often easy to find in thrift shops often being sold for about $.25/ea). Hope this helps.
