Mr. Cameron appeared to be playing the populist card, with one of Michael Howard's 'dog whistle' issues - immigration - ('come to Darren, Tyson'), and of course his prose was given the usual acres of space in the Sun, Daily Mail, etc...but is it not true his party as a whole welcome what is happening - and thus realise it's necesary to plan for an increase in population.

Immigration isn't really a right/left issue. It's more of a people/politicians issue. The American People are leary of immigration in general, and strongly opposed to illegal immigration, while American politicians are in love with immigration in general, and thier campaign contributors are addicted to the cheap labor illegal immigrants provide.

More generaly, though, yes, to some extent the whole political spectrum moves to the left over time. If liberals succeed in changing something and keeping it changed for a generation or so, the next crop of conservatives treats it like a tradition, and actually starts defending it (while the next crop of liberals, of course, try to change it some more). Conversely, when conservatives 'win' they just maintain the status quo. So, the political spectrum can either stay put (if the conservatives always win) or move to the left (if the liberals ever win). It can't really move to the right.

(There's probably a parallel to be draw with the Laws of Thermodynamics in there somewhere...)

The problem we have in the US is that the Conservatives keep moving further and further to the right, but talk further and further to the left. Maybe you are having the same problem in the UK.

No. What prose of the right? based on the Republican Party's most vocal members, i.e., those running for President, for the definition of ultra conservatism.... they are, with the exception of Ron Paul.... all acting and speaking like a bunch of willy wonkers! - speaking of the US Conservatives.

Labour is going to the right.
Tories are going to the left.

They are blended into some centre blur.
