Professor asked class to try and find out info about it but didn't think anyone would succeed. So far she has been right. Any help would be appreciated.

sorry it came out of a Portuguese site. if you understand Spanish you might be able to read it

I'm not sure of the equations need to resolve this question, but if you ask me, its not expected to hit ANY time soon.

The IAU: Minor Planet Center, which is the official clearinghouse of the world for all asteroids, does not list asteroid (1587) Kahrstedt = 1933 FS1 as one of the asteroids expected to pass close to Earth before the year 2178. In fact, with a semimajor axis of 2.54AU and an eccentricity of 0.15, that asteroid is not even in an Earth crossing orbit. It's perihelion distance is well outside of the orbit of Mars. It is a main belt asteroid that always stays between Mars and Jupiter!

It wasn't easy tracking down this obscure, run of the mill asteroid in the MPC databases. Your professor must think she is pretty cute to tell you it is a planet killer that will impact Earth knowing that most people would have no clue how to check out that patently false claim.

Never. Plain and simple. Maybe your prof was just interested in finding out how gullible some of you are? I guess he got an answer now:

VERY.
