On Halloween the "undead" (people in costume) haunt the night. In order for them to go back to the grave without bothering you, you must appease them by giving them treats. Or else. ;-)

Well I always thought that it was because Halloween was you know, a scary night where spirits were allowed to roam around freely, so any visitors that came to houses on halloween night would get a gift of food or some sort of sweet for being so courageous as to go outside. But almost ALL of the stories are different. So it's almost as if it can be interpreted any way you like.....

Well, when Halloween was first celebrated, people would dress up as some kind of ghoul or something and go visit people to protect them from the dead, who might come back and haunt them on Halloween night for anything bad they ever did to the ghost when it was alive, and when you would come to protect the person, or to make sure they were ok, they would give you some kind of food or snack, treat ,etc. as thanks. That's how it developed into what it is today.

i've always wondered about that too... more than likely it is some adaptation of the ancient pagan rituals that Halloween is based on, but it most likely wasn't always candy.

On the other hand, maybe the holiday was created by an international consotium of dentists?

It's FUN!

I do NOT give candy to the old teens who don't even bother with a costume.

Don't you watch the Simpsons? There's a halloween episode that explains it so accurately, you wouldn't have to ask if you'd seen it. :) LOL!!!

To keep the "trick or treaters" from "tricking" you! It's your choice. No treat ... look out!
