The back of my watch says 50 Meters/5 ATM. Does this mean it is waterproof? Can I shower or swim with it?

The ISO water resistance standards for watches are as follows:

- Water resistance or 3ATM/30m = accidental splashes

- 5ATM/50m = swimming

- 10ATM/100m & 15ATM/150m & 20ATM/200 = swimming, snorkelling water sports

The list above is taken from

http://www.chealwatch.com/water.htm

That site has a list of other definitions and tips about water proof watches and applies to all brands, not just theirs.

Once you open a watch to change the battery, the water proof rating is no longer valid unless it was re-sealed by the factory.

IF the watch has never been opened for servicing then yes your watch is waterproof. The 50 meters means it is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters. ( the 5atm I belive means 5 atmospheres )

It depends on the store you got it at. Some of the stores have cheap-o watchs. And the reason it got water in it is probably mabye the frame of the watch was not sucure with the glass. here is an easy way to tell it is broken. put it out in the sun for an hour or 2 and then take it inside the house. then try to see if it works! Good Luck!!!

most watches are not water proof, but rather water resistant. Which basically means they can take water a little at a time for up to a certain depth. However, they can not handle prolonged periods of time immersed in water.
