A decent spec for a kid would be something like pentium 4 2gig HZ, 512mem, 80gig hard drive.

This will allow them to play some games and wont be too slow and allow them to use the internet.

If you use the internet and dont want kids to look at certain websites, this software can help prevent that https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=1719518&referrer=Wisdom_Mcr it is called Kidsnet - Internet Filtering and Parental Controls

Some games you may wish to try are :
Pirates of the atlantic - https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=1694468&referrer=Wisdom_Mcr

Zamby and the Mystical Crystals - https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=1715798&referrer=Wisdom_Mcr

Here is a link for some quality refurbished items. You can find some newer computers as well at a discounted price.

http://www.dfsdirectsales.com/

These systems are usually leased to large companies and are in very good condition. Just look through it, they also have phone sales dept. where they can help you find something in your price range. The good thing about Dell is, even if there is no warranty left on it, everything you need for your computer, you can get online for free from support.dell.com. Other companies like Gateway or HP actually charge you $60 for a cd with their drivers if you want them to send it to you if you are out of warranty!

And you dont have to feel guilty for buying yourself a new computer and giving your old one to your kid! You can get a brand new computer for under $400! I just hopped on their website and this is the first thing I found.

http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/results.aspx/desktops?~ck=anav&c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&a=22~0~65&navla=22~0~65

If you can wait a little bit, keep checking back on their website. Once a month or so, Dell has "Days of Dell" where computers are ridiculously discounted! Good luck and have fun!

Get the Used Computer instead of Refurbished Pentium 4 2.0+ and 512 MB ram will be fine and make sure you get A good VGA card.

eBay has great deals on refurbished computers. If you go to dell and HP.com, they also have refurbished laptops and such that you can buy. Any one that is fast and new-ish will be perfect for your 8 year old.

just make sure the hard drive is big enough if he downloads or installs a lot of games...128 or 256 memory should be fine, 40G Hard Drive should do it...not sure what else you need to know??
