It depends upon which operating system you are using. If you've got Windows XP or Vista, hold down CTRL, ALT, DEL and then let them go. The Windows task manager should come up or you can select the option to start task manager (in Vista). On the toolbar in task manager, go to "File" and then go to "New Task (Run . . .)" and type in explorer.exe and hit OK.
That might get your desktop back, and you can check out what's running to see what the problem might be.

Try using to bring up Task Manager. See if you have an "Explorer.exe" process running. You may need to select the Processes tab on the interface and you can sort by Image Name to find it easier.
If not, try to start a Explorer process in the Applications tab. Select the New Tasks button and just type in "explorer.exe" (without the quotes). This should be in your environment path so you can run it without a full path to the file. If that doesn't work, try using the full path as "C:\windows\explorer.exe".

you may have a windows key on your keyboard as well next to your left alt key if so pressing that may bring up your start menu. You should reboot though to see if it happens again if so run your anti virus and anti spyware and try to repair the problem that way.

Hit Ctrl Alt Del, choose "new task" and then type in the word "explorer." That will bring your desktop and icons back.

It sounds like your screen is "rolled down" to far for it to show. YOu have some buttons on the front that will roll it back up.
