sometimes, it will open normally. you can almost feel the catch. no problems closing. as stated, we often have to resort to hitting it from the inside to work thru' the catch. we haven't tried anything as of yet. home remedies are good. we don't want to pay a hoard of money for the mechanic to spray wd40 if that's all it needs. any suggestions and help are appreciated. thanks

Buy some engine degreaser and a can of universal grease. Degrease the door latch, wipe it clean, and apply new grease. Be sure to degrease and re-grease the latch in both open and closed positions. It might take a couple of tries of just opening and closing the door for the new grease to fully lubricate the door latch. You may use WD-40, however it is a light oil and won't be a permanent fix.

Check to see if door lube or lock grease is hard or old. If so you will need o clean and apply door lube which is normally a white grease. Use sparingly as you do not want to get on your clothes later. For inside door lock use a graphite based oil like "Lock-ease". Also make sure door is aligned with door jamb catch if a bit lower you may need to replace door hinge bushings.

K1200 and Gary have good answers...check for the latch being sticky or gummed up with grease and dirt....clean and relube as necessary and check how the door latches on the striker...is the door sagging and binding? may have to adjust the door hinges or replace bushings. Could just be a worn out latch also.
