Start by finding the *prime* factors of 42.

42 / 2 = 21
21 / 3 = 7
7 / 7 = 1

So the prime factors of 42 are 2, 3 and 7.

But you want all the factors, which would be all combinations of these.

1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42

And don't forget that negative numbers can be factors too:
-1, -2, -3, -6, -7, -14, -21, -42

As a double-check try pairing your factors up to see if you missed any:
1 x 42 = 42
2 x 21 = 42
3 x 14 = 42
6 x 7 = 42
-6 x -7 = 42
-3 x -14 = 42
-2 x -21 = 42
-1 x -42 = 42

A factor of 42 means that when divided by a whole number, the result is a whole number.

42 / 1 = 42 (so 42/42 = 1 )
42 / 2 = 21 (so 42/21 = 2 )
42 / 3 = 14 (so 42/14 = 3 )
42 / 4 = 10.5, so 4 isn't a factor
go on like that and you'll find 6 is a factor as well (with the result of 7, so 7's a factor as well)
Then, until 14, there's no other factor. You already had 14 as a result on 42 / 3 so that's all.

1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42

First find out if you're looking for all factors of 42, or the PRIME factors of 42. If you're looking for all factors, that could take a while.

prime factors of 42: 2, 3, 7
-----------
any factors of 42:
start with the prime factors 2, 3, 7
add 1 to the group: 1, 2, 3, 7
now find all the possible combinations of factors that aren't
already in the group: 6, 14, 21, 42
factors so far: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42
now add the negatives to the group to get:
-42, -21, -14, -7, -6, -3, -2, -1, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42

42 = 2*21

21 = 3*7

So 42 = 2*3*7
2,3, and 7 cannot factor anymore, so all the factors of 42 are 2,3 and 7
