How about the rate of recidivism for DUI offenders who receive differing treatments. For example, is rehab better than AA? Does incarceration solve recidivism after release. In my county, we have 10 Native American tribes. Our county's DWI program (DWI is our phrase for DUI) uses traditional healers for the Native Americans. The traditional healers have a 17% recidivism rate after 7 years. The state has a 72% recidivism rate after only one year. I doubt, but don't know, that incarceration is the answer to recidivism. It gets the drunks off the road while they're in jail, but I've seen too many cases where an individual spends 3 years in jail and immediately gets a DUI/DWI when released. I was amused, in an ironic sense, by a recent case. A man did 36 months in the penal system. The day he got out he got drunk and ran into the back of a police car. He said: "I always have bad luck when I drink." Obviously, he did not learn anything about sobriety in jail. If you look on line (which I have not done) I'll bet you can find statistics on AA vs. rehab.
