The term Halloween (and its alternative rendering Hallowe'en) is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", a day to venerate saints.

It could have been known in some circles as beggars eve because people preparing for the veneration of the saints the next day, and the feast for the saints would be more likely to be generous and give alms to the poor.

Just a guess.

The night before Halloween is "Beggars Eve", which MOST deem to call "Devils Night" now a days, I spose' it is where ya are from and what ya believe in. However, it does exist and has far back as I can remember.

Beggers night was always the day/night before Halloween. At least it was in our neighborhood. In fact it was a bigger celebrated night than Halloween night. There were stipulations, you had to be in costume as a hobo, the cane and hankerchief over your shoulder the whole nine yards, tattered clothing, dirty face. Most people were cool with it, others refused to pass out candy and reminded us that Halloween was the night for trick or treating. We enjoyed two nights of bagging candy. Sorry no other web site I know of that could help just my own experience.
