The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (usually referred to by the abbreviation H-R diagram or HRD, also known as a Colour-Magnitude diagram, or CMD) shows the relationship between absolute magnitude, luminosity, classification, and effective temperature of stars.

Stars were analyzed for size, color, and temperature - then plotted on a chart. It was somewhat surprising to find that all three factors were related. This chart is called the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, and is used to determine the type of star being observed.
