i cant figure out the lewis structure for this one. i come up with a total of 26 dots

I think you should have only 20 valence electrons in this molecule:

Each H has 1 to give you 6,
Each C has 4 to give you 8,
Each O has 6 to give you 6.

Total = 20 electrons.

Remember, you only care about the valence electrons of each atom.
