The Sun is a typical Star. Hence Cosmologists have Used the Sun to determine what happens to stars during their life time.
Stars are mass structures composed mostly of Hydrogen plasma atoms. The energy radiated out of star is due to Nuclear reaction of this plasma.
The Nuclear reaction process is called "Fusion." It is a mass restructuring process of converting Hydogen atoms into Helium atoms. As a result of this process mass is lost out of the parent atoms. Therefore a radiation flux occurs which is emitted to the surounding space of the volume of the Universe. This flux is emitted as radiation power. The amount of radiation Power is absorbed on the basis of a certain amount of time which we call "Energy."

Nuclear fusion, which is the conversion of some lighter element into a heavier element. This process releases huge amounts of energy.

Falsely it is associated with nuclear fusion. In reality most of the energy a large star will give off during its whole lifetime comes from gravitation, although much of it in its final seconds when it goes supernova.

gravity. when a gas giant (like jupiter and saturn) is so massive the hyrdrogen modelcules get mashed to together causeing a nuclear reaction.
A star is a huge nuclear reactor converting H to HE, and then HE into a heavier element, and so on.
