I think a gift is supposed to be something they will like and you want for them. Sometimes it is even more fun to give them gifts you know they like and they will be happy with it and in the same time you want them to have it, other than letting them tell you what they want as a gift and them kinda expect it. Then is no surprise there and when are no surprises it is sad.

I try to buy them something they like. It's more fun to give (and receive) gifts that are things you normally wouldn't buy for yourself. It can be difficult when I'm buying for someone I don't know as well (such as an in-law), so I keep an ear out when they mention things they like and get ideas from that. Often, if I know there's something they like, I'll build a present around it. Like my sister-in-law's favorite snack is popcorn, so last year I bought her a large ceramic popcorn bowl, filled it with bags of microwave popcorn, and move theater gift certificates.

Oh, always stuff they like, or things they have shown an interest in over the past year. For my family, its easy to keep track of the things they have oohed and ahhhed over for the lasy 365 days, so I generally come up with good gifts.

I like useful gifts. I like to both give and receive gifts that you actually use or need rather than silly things that end up in a closet or drawer and generally forgotten about.

I usually give gift cards to their favorite store so they can get what they want. There's only one person I actually "shop" for. I ask others what they want then "try" to find it. If not: gift card!

if i know the person well, i will buy them something that they wouldn't normally buy for themselves. a little treat that they might not indulge in normally.

if i'm not too familiar with them, a gift card is always good.

It's a mix, no one ever tells me what they want, they're always like "Oh it's alright...meowww..."

But I usually see things while I shop and I'm like: "Hey that's good!'
