The other awnsers are probably correct on his lifetime salary and he did top out at $80000. But its not what he made, its what he paid porportionaltely, you could buy a new T model ford for $290 in the late 20s and Ford was paying like 7-8 dollars a day to skilled workers. I think you could buy a nice 2 bedroom house for around $2000,you could get a World Series ticket for $2.20, so his salary was enormous and he deserved it. When he was asking for 80 grand the Yankees countered with $75 K and he actually got the $5000 for 2 yrs on a coin flip with the owner Judge Ruppert. I dont know what Ruths top salary would be in 2007 dollars but it would be huge.

I think Ruth topped out at $100,000 per year. When someone at the time asked him if he thought it was right that he was earning more than the President of the United States, he replied, "I had a better year than the President!"

His first year as a pitcher he only got 10,000 a year.
But Immediatly after 3 years his salary was raised to 100,000
When he got into his groove of 50 HR 150 RBI Seasons he was being paid 800,000.

The Babe's peak was $80,000, which, with inflation factored in, would be about $1.2 million today.
"If I was playing today, I'd walk up to Steinbrenner and say, George, you and I are going to be partners." -- Joe DiMaggio (whose peak of $100,000 would also be about $1.2 million today)

His career salary total was barely $850,000, which seems astounding when compared to today. This link has a list of what he made every season:

Scroll to the bottom, and it's listed there.

I know that the Yankees "bought" him from the Red Sox for $100,000, a staggering sum at the time.
