I've asked this question before, but never really got the answer I was looking for. We sleep because our bodies need rest, but it seems that our minds never really sleep. We dream, solve problems, and resolve conflict while we sleep. So, why is it that when we dont physically go to sleep, our minds don't work to full capacity the next day? And after seven days without sleep, shows the beginning signs of insanity.

Join the crowd. Your not the only one who has not fully satisfied objectively the subjective nature of a human individuals mental activity. We can obtain better answers now but they just open up to more unknown factors in each and every one of our realities so much so that to maintain a constant stasis over it is more out of some habituating circumstance and not really related to the answer at all. We don't have to be unfulfilled but we constantly choose to be so because if we aren't so we don't feel good. Then we learn to feel better in the constant stasis of not knowing than in the learning of the answer which will mean the giving up of something old and known for something new and not known. Most of us don't have to go seven days to be insane. All we have to do is be born in a neurotic generation and we are automatically insane.
There are so many activities intrinsically on all levels including the more sophisticated level where the mental activity takes place. I believe the activity on that level when one sleeps is mostly unconcious but clearly some sort of mental activiy must be taking place and becomes so in dreams. And there you have it. The best that science can do for you is direct yourself inward towards yourself where you can observe these activities and perhaps orient yourself more towards uncovering these answers which are like situations inside of you that need to be freely a part of you so you dont feel this emptiness and frustration.

Think of you body as a car. You drive around all day, fill up some gas, drive around some more. Then you come home and park the car and turn the engine off. But you don't disconnect the battery do you? Why not? Because then if you forgot your wallet in the car and you would open the door the light wouldn't come on. Also, in the morning when you wanted to start you car up it wouldn't start up because the battery is disconnected. Same thing with you body. Your body needs the brain to be connected and functioning 24/7 so that if you need to get up at night and pee you don't walk around like a zombie. The mind also cannot live with out the body therefore the body rests. Just like you can't drive your car 24/7 or else it will break down, do your body needs rest too. Or else you will go crazy. Or break down. You pick.

I get the point you are making, but I have to say first that there is no proof that people solve problems and resolve conflicts while they are sleeping, but there is proof that they will be btter able to do this AFTER a night's sleep.

Not all parts of the brain need rest (the autonomic system). This is because we still need to breathe and maintain systemic homeostasis while we sleep, or we will die. Sleep is more for the rest of the brain and body. It is the other parts of the brain that will create the problem if a person doesn't sleep.

You are missing deep sleep which is the unknown factor. Read the article on the site below about happiness and what psychologists have found out about it.

It also tells how deep sleep is the time when you go back to the uncreated state, the place where you come from. It is the place you are trying to get back to. This is the reason that you are alive to begin with.

I think both the mind and the brain need sleep to repair. The body repairs the muscles, etc, and the brain repairs by shifting through experiences and consolidating information.
