Not for free, you can buy a small mixing board and microphone, and software like Garage Band. If it's worth doing, it's worth buying $200.00 - $300.00 of equipment. Invest in yourself!

There are several ways, but a lot depends on the computer you use.

The simplest way is direct-into-computer.

If you have an Apple computer, it is a breeze.
If you have a PC, well, I'm sorry, but it's gonna cost you more to get it ready to record.

The Apple allows for a mic connection and you can instantly record, using the pre-installed GarageBand application.

A PC will require that you buy a sound card and then buy a music recording application and install both.

My own experience with GarageBand has been fantastic - I do a lot of rough tracks with guitar, bass, vocal as well as the apps own virtual instruments.

I also use Pro Toolsfor my professional recording...but I suspect that this would be too costly for you at this point.

Let me know if I can address your question further.
