without a single unifying belief?

If Mao was suddenly put in charge of the US, and he committed the atrocities that up until a few years ago the US found abominable but now are ok, would ... MADD members, for example, protest unabashedly out in the streets over the mass killings of say.... members of the NRA? Would Democrats protest the killing of Republicans?

Bwana - I don't think you understood my question at all. Read it again. I'm interested in knowing your response.

Skaizun - I think you're missing it too. Hitler might seem bizarre... but he was real. Burma has separate groups and one unifying belief. All the people took to the streets to protest injustice until they were crushed by sheer force. What unites the people of the US that we would do that if we saw injustice in our own country? and if we would.... when would we start? what would be the threshhold of atrocities that would make everyone react?

Both heterogenous and homogenous populations have been enslaved by tyrants, though, since most populations in history have been homogenous, there are more examples of this.

In a heterogenous population, more violence and brutality and open hostility is required - witness Russia/USSR or Iraq -but if there is significant resistance, it usually turns into a civil war between factions (e.g. Lebanon, Balkans, Congo, etc).

In America, there would be a significant rebellion against any attempt at dictatorship, and it would likely be led by the military, but most able-bodied and armed Americans would join in, I think.

Actually all countries are made up of separate groups of people. If a government decides to break up communities - as most have - it's really easy to turn them into wage slaves.

Don't believe me? Open your front door and take a peek at the world outside.

Yes its easier because they don't unify against you. If the indian nations of North America unified against us back then, things might have been a bit different.

Bizarre scenarios, aside, please let us know when you intend on doing so, and we will all join you! ;)

P.S. I defy you to find a country that does not have "separate groups", but also has a "unifying belief"!
