Italy since the Empire tended to have been split up into small uninified states with competing interests, and often at the mercy of foreign powers. In other cases, only a handful of dominant cities had significant influence (usually in trade). So unquestionable unity was a way to overcome this.

Also, WWI had weakened or destroyed the traditional empires, and the opportunity for Italy's ascendancy to a position of power seemed obvious.

Fascism appealed to Italians, because it promised what desires they had for themselves and their nation. Italy would grow into a strong and nationalistic nation; the recreation of its' glorious and exalted past, including the justification of imperialist expansion.

I'm sure it started with good intention that turned. Protect your own. Italians have big famillies and fierce loyalty to them it was just in ther nature to do something like that and when they started to make money well it spread
