I work at a call center in Utah and so many african american women from the southern states call in to buy products but can't purchase them because we don't accept money orders and they have no other way to pay. I thought the majority of people knew they could trust banks and credit cards, but not them!

Ugh...i didn't mean to start controversy, i am 0% racist, but it is not that hard to tell some peoples' skin color by their dialect...I just talk to so many people from around the country, and this is definitely the demographic that does not have a checking account or credit card.

Being from the south, I am qualified to answer this question. Because having either will interfer with their government benefits. And that is a fact.

Wondering how long before the thumbs down start or I am reported. Some folks just don't like hearing the truth.

I don't think it's an AA thing. I just think that some people were taught to save for what they want to purchase instead of using a credit card. Remember consumer debt is not really a good thing. So technically it's not a bad thing to not have a credit card. It's just that the world is becoming plastic. So don't fault those that choose to keep their money in a savings account.
Also, there are many people who have had issues with the banks in the past and just decided not to trust them or use them.
So instead of assuming this is only one group of people, take another approach. Perhaps at your next meeting ask the question "How can this company accommodate those who don't have credit cards or bank accounts. Can we accept money orders?" Make a note of how many calls you are receiving a month that request money orders. You may also want to do a quick internet search re: how many people or what % still do not use banks. This shows that you are being proactive and showing initiative.

I am a African American from south Carolina. you find a lot of the older women do not have credit cards nor do they have bank accounts because in there time our money was not good enough for a bank. and why waste your time with credit cards when you can pay for it cash and not worry about interest rates. and for the other users who wrote :it will mess up there government benefits sweetie YOU ARE IGNORANT

I'm amazed that you can see the color of people's skin right through the phone. You're good. But at that aside, a lot of poorer people do not have bank accounts or credit because they have not been educated as to basic financial practices. Most people in this country who are poor come from families who are poor. They have been poor for generations. Unfortunately, we live in a society that does not believe in education about certain basic practices and finance is one of them. You probably learned a lot about operating your personal affairs by watching your parents. Not everyone grows up in a home where these lessons are passed down.

I am not an African American, and I don't use or have credit cards. I live by the rule of-if you can't pay for it now, you don't really need it. My question would be, Why is it so hard to NOT have a credit card.

Plenty of PEOPLE don’t have bank accounts because they don’t trust or see value in the banking system. Some reasons for not having a credit card include a) past credit problems , b) little to no credit history, c) no perceived value in having a credit card.
