Is it something you do only when you notice scratches on its base and when you've noticed your board hasn't been performing as well as it should?

Also, how often to get it hot waxed?

It depends on what kind of riding you do. Regardless, you should get it hot waxed every time it is tuned.

If you ride in the park and hit rails, etc - you will mess up your edges and need to get your board tuned more often. No amount of waxing or hot waxing will make your board last longer when you are hitting features in a park.

If you ride the powder, trails, or the groomed slopes - once or twice per season will be enough to keep the edges sharp and will make your board last as long as possible.

Good Luck

Every 3-4 times you go riding is optimal. The person above is dead wrong. If you only wax once a season you'll board will not last very long. Do not wait until your board has scratches on it! Just follow this waxing rule and get a base grine 1-2 x a season depending on what kind of riding you'll be doing. If you do rails/ park a lot maybe 2-3 but if not maybe once a season if needed. If your base has deep gouges on it you'll need to use a p tex candle before you wax.

I do mine right before the resort opens and I alsways get a cold temperature wax and tunr (it gets -40 here) and then again about half way through the season. But I live in a ski ersort and ride about 30-40 days a season. So it depends on how often you ride but ALWAYS get one right before the season starts

I guess this is a personal taste and depends on your skill level.

To have it tuned every season would certainly be good.

And a thoroughly waxed snowboard/waxed skiers of course manouver better than others.
