Learn the four S's.
1. Swaddle snuggly
2. Suckle - a pacifier
3. Sway
4. Shhhhhhhhh

These were tips from a woman in England that is a professional nanny for newborns and she is known as the Baby Whisperer.
I have used these techniques on the infants of my friends and wish I had known about them with my own children.
You do all of the above at once when your baby seems fussy or won't stop crying. Both you and your husband/wife(not sure which one you are) and other members of your family should learn and remember to practice them.
These four things combined simulate the baby's atmosphere in the womb.
So you wrap snuggly in a blanket, restricting the baby's freedom to move it's arms and legs, give the baby something to suck on, gently sway, and say shhhhh in the baby's ear continously. It usually only takes about five minutes to get a screaming infant to calm down and fall asleep. This is done after you know the baby has been fed, burped, changed, ect and is still crying. Babies are easily overstimulated by their enviroment and this puts them back into their comfort zone where everything is a bit muffled as far as sound, the shhhh is very important as it reminds them of the sound of the water in the womb. The snug blanket reminds them of the snug fit in the womb. They usually suck their fingers in the womb, and the mother is moving about with them constantly while they are in the womb,so the need to sway.
The mother can create her babies schedule somewhat by what she does while she is pregnant. The baby becomes accustomed to the same quiet time she has, the same motion she has now is what the baby will be accustomed to when it arrives. So if she always prepares dinner at a certain time don't be surprised that when the baby arrives it will want to be held and carried while she is fixing dinner. It is going to be used to certain motions and expect them at those times.

I recommend getting a Snuggly. It is designed to allow the mother/father to carry the baby and still have your hands free. It also has the baby positioned against your chest to hear your heartbeat, another sound it is used to. There are many types and brands to choose from,Snuggly is a name brand but if you ask for it, or a version of it, the store will know what you want.

If I were you, I would also get the book written by the Baby Whiperer. For first time parents it is something I think is essential. So many infants die each year from shaken baby syndrome, due to the inexperienced mom or dad not being able to get a screaming baby to calm down. Good people, not abusive in any other way, who just lose their cool and want some peace. They shake the baby, it does get quiet but it is severely injured. Very little shaking motion is needed to cause a bleed in an infants brain. That is why I said to learn these techniques, and make sure that EVERYONE that cares for your baby does as well. You and your husband/wife will feel more confident in caring for your baby with being able to soothe a crying baby. NEVER allow anyone to raise baby over their heads and bring down quickly, not until the baby can sit up on it's own should this be done. It can bruise the brain,or cause a bleed, injure the neck or spine.

Well, I hope this helps and congratulations on your expected addition.

First thing I would do is locate a birthing and parenting class and get the schedules for each. The parenting class you can take now, the birthing class when you get closer to term.

I'd also buy or go to the library for some books on pregnancy and parenting a newborn. The 'For Dummies' series has one on baby's first year and one on parenting that have good general information (I learned a lot from them before my son arrived).

Those books and classes will provide you with lots of information and checklists about what to have on hand.

Good luck!

You don't need near as much as people think.

It's amazing what our parents had to work with and we survived!

There are awesome sites that give you tips and weekly emails that keep you updated on the babies growth and ideas for what you'll need.
