Nope. It's cutesy, trendy, and made-up sounding. His teachers & classmates can't spell it. Give the kid a normal name.

Not at all. Unfortunately, thousands of other parents have recently "thought of" it as well. Just another gender-obscured Jay- name to add to the already overwhelming masses. Jayden, Jayson, Jayda, Jayde, Jayla, Jayley, Jaycee, etc. All Jay- misspellings of (generally) familiar names that happen to be part of a huge trend at the moment. Also, since the -lyn substituted ending seems to indicate you intend this for a girl, you should be aware that Jalen -- the proper, traditional spelling, still said as most say "Jaylyn" -- is a masculine name. Generally used as a variant of Galen. Not my style at all.

You should do what my friend did.

Take the name that you like and insert it into different situations and see how they sound. She tried the following two:

"Hear ye, hear ye. All rise for the honorable Judge (insert test first name) (insert your last name). Court is now in session."

or

"Let's keep this party going. Please welcome, for your pleasure, our dancer of the year on center stage here at the Foxy Lady. Gentlemen put your hands together for (insert test first name) (insert your last name)."

If it sounds good in the first instance, you've got a winner. If it sounds good in the second instance, keep looking.

P.S. The second one of course only works for a girl. For a boy's name you could substitute the following:

"We the jury in the above titled action find the defendant, (insert test name) (insert your last name) guilty of the crime of armed robbery."

Way too trendy. Adding a billion y's does not a good name make.
