Actually it has to do with the effects of the adrenal gland. When the brain is stimulated by the secretins of this gland, there is a hightened feeling of awareness that has to do with the brain processing information faster...

On the science channel an expirement was performed in which a man was wearing something like a big watch on his wrist. the device was flashing numbers, but could not be seen just by looking at it, cause the flashing was so fast...but when they suspened the man from high up and dropped him at a moment he didnt expect, he fell a hundred feet into a net...when he got off the netting he was able to tell them the number that was flashing...pretty amazing huh?

It is just because time is not only chronological but also psychological. When you experiment an accident or anything stressful or disappointing, your brain in focused in every little thing it is happening, in every second or millisecond. The time is the same, but your impression is that everything is going slower. Organically, the brain is processing information faster helped by the adrenaline that keeps you more concentrated in every second.

I think it's some survival instict. Recentl I was in a minor car accident, a car was flying at me and everything seemed to go in slow motion, I actually had time to put my car in reverse and back up before this car taht was hit spun and flew into me. I think it's some type of survival instict that like you said, everthing else shuts down and allows you to focus on only vital things.

Because your body pumps adrenalin into your system which makes your brain, muscles and heart function faster. When everything slows down it means you're speeding up.

Its your addrenalin rush. When it hits your body it causes you to react to things faster. Its like NOS for your body. So your faster reactions makes it seem like time has slowed down.
