They can continue to push back the date as long as they stay within the statute of limitations. More than likely, the courts are just backed up and they have more important cases that need to be tried.

Your case was continued. One of the parties asked for it, either defense or prosecution and the judge granted it. If it wasn't your attorney, then it was the DA, probably to have more time to prepare.
