It's very sweet of people to give me flowers. But I have a problem. I hate it when they give me cut flowers. I prefer a living plant. Anyone else that way?

While cut flowers are beautiful and yes I will enjoy them for a few hours then pass them on to a friend. I prefer living plants because I have such a green thumb. From one plant, I can make several.
I just love the idea of not killing off the plants

Socko, that is hillarious, I am not that mental about it. I just hate to see things die.

I have never heard this before. You are so sweet, really.
But the thought came into my head , I wonder if she feels bad when she steps on grass.

I adore both!

Cut flowers allow me to bring a bit of color into the dimmer portions of my house. I can place a vase or arrangement of cut flowers anywhere for a brief show. I think it's fun to change things around. I grew sunflowers last year (several different varieties), and I had vases of them around the house for months!

I also enjoy the potted plants I've received or bought. 2 weeks ago I picked up a chrysanthemum plant, in a 8 inch pot, full of buds for $2.00. It's sitting on a plant stand next to my front door and the buds are almost all open. The blooms are a copper color with yellow centers....it looks great. I'll find a spot for it in my yard when it's done blooming.

I love repotting the plants from arrangements. I had one plant finally give up the ghost recently.....the plant came from an arrangement I received over 20 years ago....that is the longest I've ever kept a potted plant going!

I like to cut flowers from my yard for the house. The blooms will die anyway and they do better with the pruning. I have several living plants and often repot new starts as gifts. There is only one place in the house where sunlight gets in and they will grow. I've tried other areas with no success. So now I'd rather plant outside and watch them grown in the spring/summer. My sister gave me 2 cactus starts from TX a yr or two ago and now I have a nice little bed of them. Cactus is my favorite plant.

Cut flowers make a statement, " expensive, for you, won't last, but thought they would cheer you up and you are worth it." Living plants make a statement, " I am practical, you are practical, and you can go through the work of planting this "gift" of work I have given you...if it dies, you are a rotten person!" :-)
OF the two, I love the living plants ! Everytime I look at that plant, I am reminded of the person who gave it to me. BUT when in a hospital, I give cut plants, for the patient hopefully will go home soon, and doesn't need the extra baggage to carry with them. AS a sympathy or get well gesture at home, I give live plants. ... unless the recipient is already tending a hot house (like me) and then I give the cheery cut plants. I think that nothing says "I love you" as much as extravagant cut plants. I still prefer the living ones...just me. Phil

I usually send my mother cut flowers, because she feels so responsible for live plants. She propagates them and then doesn't know what to do with all the plants. She's running out of room! I do like to send her a pot of geraniums or something like that for mother's day. She puts it outside and cares for it all summer, but doesn't feel bad when winter comes and they die. If you give me a plant, it will just die more slowly than cut flowers. My windows all face either east or west and have no sills. I have large trees blocking most of them, so I need plants that require low light. I'm also bad at remembering to water them.. The only one I've been able to keep alive is a peace lily (spath.) So yes, I like cut flowers. I like to send plants as a funeral offering, but even that can be a burden to the recipient.

No I am the opposite to you...while I don't have a black thumb, I DO have a hard time keeping living plants alive. Cut flowers are much preferred.

My mom got a bunch of plants when I was taking care of her in NC--most were forced to bloom so it took a season or more for them to pop back but I planted a poinsettia outside and it actually got about 4' high and had red petals at Christmas that year then it froze. I planted a lace cap hydrangea that was beautiful and lots of Narcissus and another blue hydrangea and azaleas and all lived and prospered. I like cut flowers but always like to grow and arrange my own, most of the ones from the florist have no smell anymore. ;0)

My hubby gave me some long stemmed red velvety roses
two days ago. He got them at a shop near us that sells over-
stock from other stores. And he got these beautiful roses for
no occasion. And I was so surprised and happy at the same
time. Being on a fixed income, there's no money for splurges.
But he got all six for only a dollar. That's a heck of a deal.
I love flowers both cut and in pots. I don't get flowers often
and when I do, I enjoy them in whatever state they arrive.

My grandchildren bring me flowers sometimes. I try to either dry them or mash them in a book. I agree that I would rather have a plant. Cut flowers die so quickly.
I often take a picture while they are fresh, it's the only way to enjoy them for any length of time.

I am not a big fan of cut flowers, usually the fragrance gives me a headache. I also seem to kill plants, pretty sad. I love and prefer good chocolate!

Most flowers are grown for temporary enjoyment. While a plant lasts, I do enjoy the rare times I receive fresh flowers. I even buy myself some when spring fever sets in.
