I got my Private Pilots License, went caving for the first time, learnt to scuba dive.

40 is a brilliant age - your confidence will grow, you become more sure of yourself, and you don't give a da*n what anyone else thinks of you - all that insecurity gone!!!

Enjoy it.x

ThenWhen is right--people are utilizing more and more talents later in life! A concert pianist?? Unless you've demonstrated that talent and are willing to put in the work--I would think probably not. At 45, I was forced to get a divorce and took my little daughter with me. I got a student loan, got an MA in Guidance and Counseling and worked as a therapist with very troubled adolescents for 21 yrs. I found that I had a knack to help them get to their root problems and then to problem-solve their way out to a productive life. At 78, I think that there are unlimited areas that we can follow and develop. It's just a question of how much energy we're able and willing to invest! Going back to school to explore different programs seems to me the most effective way of finding areas that fit our own personality and abilities. Don't think of the number of years you've been on Earth--think of the possibilities! and Go FOR IT!!

I became a therapist - I'd decided to go into biology at 20 because I thought psychology was too soft. It took me 2 decades to have the courage to become who I always was anyway.

BTW - I found 39 to be more difficult than 40 - it's easier to have something "bad" happen than to anticipate something "bad" happening. But I found my 41st birthday to be a complete outrage ("You mean I not only have to be 40, but I have to keep going?!!)

But as they say, 40 is the new 30. ;-)
