going to the Drive-In, dressed in your pajamas and eating the dinner your Mom brought with her, while you watched the movie from the back seat?

Oh yes, that was great fun. We never brought dinner, but we did bring our own popcorn and candy and my folks had their cokes. My brothers always fell asleep, but I stayed awake and watched all the movies. That was when you had two movies, sometimes three, a couple of cartoons, and a newsreel. You got a rain check if it rained and sometimes a fog check. This was in southern Calif. in the 50s.

I'm sure glad to see that drive ins' are making a comeback
somewhere. I know they aren't where I live. That land fell to
development years ago, and there's restaurants and a big
motel there now. I haven't heard of a drive in being used since
our kids were halfway grown. So it's been a very long time.
I still miss them. You didn't have to dress up, you could bring
snacks from home. You could bring the kids and not pay a
sitter. And the price was right at the ticket booth. I can't see
them ever coming back here. Too much land development
with houses having filled in alot of acreage. Now there's a
building slump from too much building, and builders are
hurting. I'll bet if someone were to find open land to use for
a drive in, people would surely come. And maybe save the
the future of the movie business. Who can afford the prices?

We went to the drive in all the time when I was a kid. Mom would pop tons of popcorn, and put it in a grocery bag. We had a cooler on the floor in the back seat with iced up sodas. When we had a convertible, Dad would grudgingly let us sit on the back of the back seats like beauty queens in a parade...that was the best. Sometimes we'd lay on the front of the car, leaning against the windshield.

One theatre was called the South Twin and showed different movies on each screen. We'd look out the back window trying to see the other movie, but it was usually something 'adult' and Mom would make us turn around.

I think there's still one in French Village IL, across the river from St. Louis.

My very first drive-in movie was back in 1975. I was five years old, and we watched JAWS! I remember being scared of the lake and the ocean after that. LOL But I also remember being in the back seat and enjoying the movie.
My second drive-in movie was "Love At First Bite". I think it was around the same time period. Not sure what year though. I remember wanting to be that bat that just flew away to freedom. LOL
I do remember...

I loved to go to the drive-in, Penny. We'd sit on the hood of the car on a blanket and eat fried chicken and potato salad and chips and Grandma would bring a cooler with soda and ice. What was great they'd have dusk to dawn movies. I remember seeing Oklahoma, Rebel Without a Cause, Operation Petticoat, Friendly Persuasion. One time they even showed Gone With the Wind on the big screen. God them was the good old days!

I loved the drive in. It was fun as a child. I can remember going with my Mom's friend once in a convertable with her cute sons. I thought i was so grown up sitting in that car. Saw the King and I.
We always loved the playgroung there for some reason.
We also used to sit on the roof of the car, funny how it didn't matter you were in your p.j.'s and would wander all over the place. As a teen ager I wasn't allowed to go, only wild girls id such a thing lol, good thing my mom never caught me.

I spent a lot of time at the drive in theatre as it was only 1 mile from the farm. We had great summers there. Always wanted to work in the concession stand but never did. Good memories.

I remember nights like this.
It's not dinner that I remember so much as the giant bowl of homemade popcorn we'd take with us.

I've also heard that my parents would take the truck & camper to the Drive In and when they got hungry one night went back and made cinnamon rolls.
I guess it could be smelled cooking all over the drive in. :)

We still have one here in town, and now that my kids are old enough, plan on taking them too. I'll skip the cinnamon rolls though...

I also remember going to the drive ins in my jammies with my parents. The very first movie I saw was "Ma & Pa Kettle On the Farm." That was such a funny movie. We ate dinner at home but during intermission, my dad always went to get us munchies & soft drinks. I always looked forward to the cartoons they showed before the movies began. Do you remember when their was a technical problem with the movie or sound, & everyone began honking their horns? Playing on the playground was so much fun also, & who cared if you had your jammies on? ~lol~

I remember going to the drive in movie as a child quite well. It was fun because you could go to sleep if you wanted to.

I remember having to make sure that you parked where a speaker actually worked. Get there just before dark and anxiously await the feature presentation. What fun.

Also a lot of fun as a teenager when dating.
