Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, though I don't think of him as a "Civil War" character but as a great man of Christian conviction with the great skills and talents he was given; and I think of some of the interesting things of his life including the years before the Civil War.

William Tecumseh Sherman--with a relatively low number of casualties his famous March to the Sea crippled the southern economy and destroyed the South's will and capacity to resist. As a consequence, he shortened the duration of the war considerably, ending the bloodiest conflict in American history while also helping to preserve the Union.

R.E. Lee
He was a Virginian, like me.
Was an abolitionist who was against secession, was offered lead of the union army, but rejected it and became a Confederate general when Virginia withdrew and joined the Confederacy so he could fight for his home state.
Was a master tactician.

Lt General James Longstreet. A man who gained accolades for his war-time leadership actions and yet after the war had the nerve to criticize (in my mind, accurately) the venerated R.E. Lee's decisions at Gettysburg, join the hated Republican party, and push for voting rights for freed slaves.

The Civil War wasn't a movie or TV show... it didn't have "characters", it had real people fighting with real guns, spilling real blood, and suffering agonizing deaths.
