UK, tractors appeared in the 1930's. They replaced horses over a decade or so. It was WWII that caused the BIG move to the use of machinery as the Government demanded farmers to grow staple food in larger quantities. Manpower was reduced on the farms. Land Girls filled part of the gap that men going off to war left but tractors let less workers do more and were not such high maintenance as the horses. Much woodland was destroyed and ploughed up, horses could not have done that. In the late 19th early 20th centuries steam power and traction engines were used for that sort of heavy work, tractors were petrol or diesel and more efficient that the steam engines.

tractors took the place of horses and mules ,and made it easier for farmers to get their farm work done,if wasn't for modern day tractors they couldn't keep up with the demand on the food supply, use to everything was done by horse or mule, and the tractor replaced them, that's how they got the name old work horse, good luck with it.
