The sound quality of playback through itunes is horrible on my computer, yet when I play the same files through windows media player, they sound great. I have tried fiddling with the equalizer on itunes and playing with the quicktime playback settings, but nothing works. It sounds like the songs playing through itunes are all muffled and staticky. Any ideas?

I would hook up your Ipod to the computer and see how it sounds, as opposed to the itunes playback. If both sound muffled, then it is the recordings, and the first suggestion is the problem. If the Ipod sounds good, then you might upgrade the itunes and give that a go.
Also, are the tunes in itunes or are you just playing them through itunes? If so, import them into itunes and see how that sounds.

Try deleting, then re-importing all the same music with the iTunes program. I was having trouble with my iPod jumping off to the next track in the middle of a song, and doing the trick above fixed the problem. I don't know if you've already tried this, but... it's what I have to offer.
