Yes you need your passport and a Russian Visa. I am married to a Russian Woman and went to visit her twice before she came over here.

You have to complete a short form and there are a few requirements but they are not very difficult.
For 180 dollars they issued you a invitation and got your visa for you. It takes about 2 weeks to get it. You can get it faster for a higher fee. They also email you to keep you updated on how the process is going.

Actually as a U.S. citizen you do require a visa in addition to a passport in order to enter Russia.
The process for getting one, in typical Russian fashion is very complicated.
Below are two websites detailing how to apply for one. Basically you need a Russian-based sponsor which can be a hotel, tour company, relative, employer, etc to apply for one

You need a visa. To get the visa you need an invitation. The invitation can come from your hotel, from a business you may be visiting or from an individual. But the easiest way to to simply buy it from a special website called VisaToRussia.com or VisaHouse.ru
The invite costs $35 for a 2 week trip and the visa will then cost about $100. It will take a few weeks.
