It says on my bank statement : $1.00 gas authorization.
There is nothing that states on the gas pump that I will be charged a dollar for getting the gas.
I did not EVER get anything from my bank saying that if I got gas I would be charged a dollar just for the authorization.
Is that legal?
If it is; then why did they have to put up a sign saying how much an ATM will charge you?
wtf?

You are not being charged an EXTRA dollar. When you first start a gas purchase transaction the gas pump charges your account a dollar to verify the account is active. This comes out of the account very quickly. When you are done pumping gas, the dollar charge is canceled and your account is charged the entire purchase amount. If you look at your statement after the charges are complete you will see the one correct charge.

Caveat: I have heard of a bank or two that will have two charges left on the statement, the initial one dollar charge and then the remaining charge less one dollar. So if you bought $40 in gas, you would see a $1 charge and a $39 charge.

You should keep your gas receipts until you compare them with your statement to verify they are correct.

What is happening is that when you use your debit card as a credit card, the system is authorizing your account for the charge. So they send through a $1.00 authorization request. That request is there to place a hold on your account for the purchase of the gas. The actual charge goes through on your account a couple days later and that $1.00 authorization is removed.

An authorization means that the machine charged you a dollar before you started pumping. They did this to ensure that the card is valid. That authorization should have been reversed or your gas charge should have been $1 less once the transaction was charged to your card.

Check with the bank, that might be a fee charged by the gas dealer. Where I get gas, it's 45 cents for using the debit card, but it's the dealer's fee - not the bank's.

Quit using the Debit function on the gas machine. A lot of banks charge that ATM fee anytime you use your card with the debit function, just like if you were getting cash.

Always use the credit function and you will avoid that fee.

The gas station is not doing it. It is a scam artist checking to see if your card is good. Very soon your card wil be used to purchase a lot of stuff.
