Yes, most of the time.
My mom was not creative that way, and when I was young we didn't have all that much around the house. Things changed when I got older, and discovered how do do 'theater make-up'....my poor dad lost more than one article of clothing once I started making my own costumes. He was touchy about his 'work clothes' (the old things with rips and holes). >wicked grin< My junior year of high school I volunteered at a haunted mansion fundraiser. I bought an old black silk dress, made up my face, bought a witches cap, and had a blast. I wore the dress several times over the next 10 years....it was all gauzy and ripped.
With my own kids, we might buy part of the costume-but we mostly used their collection of 'dress up' clothes we collected from thrift stores and old dance costumes. I don't think we ever bought them a packaged halloween costume....just the stage make up.

Never ! We usually threw things together at the last minute. My brother would go as a fat lady(no longer politically correct) or a hobo or a ghost. I went as a gypsy or a clown or a princess.. One year my mom made me a bunny costume from an old white sheet for Explorers ( it's like brownies) , and I won first prize. I used to make all my daughters costumes when she was little but we usually buy my grandaughters' because the costume places have such a large selection and its cheaper than making them myself.

No, I always dressed as a pirate. It was easy to do and fun as well.
When my children were young, the only store bought thing we used were masks. How much fun they had.
Thanks for a reminder that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a good costume. We have even used a sheet with a hold in it for a ghost costume.

Mom made a cat costume for me that I wore for 3 years. Other than that, it was just stuff from around the house.

sometimes we had a store bought costume, but most of ther time my mom tried to make us costumes......she thought she was creative, we didn't think so at the time......now I look back and she was pretty creative.....
this has nothing to do with halloween, but I can remember in 1st grade we were suppose to bring a pet to school, well my mother being creative as she is: brought my little brother to school we pretended he was my dog....he even did tricks.....can you believe that? now days no one would do that......me and my brother still laugh about it........he is 2 years younger......

One year I think I was Casper the Ghost. Those store costumes SUCKED. There was that plastic mask that made you face sweat and had (2) little slits you were suppose to be able to see throgh but couldn't and then there was the little apron like thingy that never fir right. Every year after that I made my own.

We always put our costumes together when we were growing up. I try to get my kids to do the same thing and they through fits. I would rather make my own costume than buy one. How many batmans, power rangers, spiderman and princess do you see every where.

We always made our own. They were so much moer original and comfortable. These days I like to compliment the kids on ones they have put together. When I was a kid we always thought a store bought would be better--how silly it seems now.

Usually we put costumes together with stuff we already had. I remember visiting second-hand stores a couple years though...and we thought that was fabulous!

Never! IF we couldn't build it, we didn't wear it...we didn't even have access to makeup... I can't imagine my mother letting loose of hers for such a one-time deal. IF we wanted black, we would char cork. IF we wanted white, we would get very inventive, make a huge mess with chalk and oil...it never seemed to work very well, but hell, we were after the candy, no more , no less..there were no contests we were entering...it was all about the candy!
