I think the stores should pay me for scanning & bagging up my own food ....or at least offer a 5% discount .... shoot I'm doing their work for them.

I think they are job killers. How many cashiers have they replaced? People think they may be faster because there is no line, but I don't think so. Besides, do they give you a discount for doing all the work? I refuse to use one. In my local Big Box hardware store early in the morning when I usually shop there, the self serve ones ar the only ones open. I always ask that a real person check me out. Most times they will open one, but if they don't I leave my stuff and go elsewhere.

I like them for the most part but I also make a mistake or two when using them. The one thing I don't like is when you wriute a check you have to wait for someone to come over.
We have senior discounts here to at the store, you have to wait for a clerk or go to a regular check out.
Give it time you will be able to work them like a pro. If you have older grandchildren take them with you. They can figure out everything and don't realize you can't. It's a win win situation.

I like and prefer them. I like packing my own bags because I know where I want things to go. I hate it when they put my bananas with the milk carton.

I don't know about senior citizens getting discounts in grocery stores. I just use coupons or watch the sales. Is that something new?

I just plain do not like it. You have to be in such a hurry to place the items while the automated voice is urging you constantly to
"Place the item on the scanner, place the item in the bag" Of course the bag is not usually in a condition that you can instantly place your purchase there. It is irritating to me because I want to be able to see what scans properly. Some of the automatic scanners miss the sales items.

Sorry, I like the checkers, especially at Krogers. Very friendly people.

I used one in FL for the first time. I had some groceries and fruit. Scanned most of the groceries, hate it when they say "place in bag", OK,. so I did and moved the bag, next I weigh the fruit it scans and I place in bag, machine says, weight, please place i bag, try it again. At this point I am getting frustrated at it, so I call the manager, he told me that that one machine was not working correctly. I will take a human check out person anyday

I prefer the more personal approach, but when the store is crowded and I only have a few things I will use them. Naturally, something doesn't scan and I end up standing there waiting for help.

I use them if I don't have any coupons. The stores won't let customers scan the coupons. They are very handy at Christmas time but often there are lines forming for these check out places, too.

I'm with Toronto Joe on this. I won't use them in the markets, and I won't use them in the airports. They replace jobs, and for what we pay, I want real customer service.

The more we use these "conveniences", the less employees the companies need.

Only once have I successfully checked myself out with one. Every other time a manager has had to come and put a key in the machine to reset it.
