The purpose of college is to educate you in the field of your choice so you can have a career you enjoy instead of a job you hate. There is a big difference between a job and a career. Not just in the pay but in the job satisfaction.

Since most of us have to work for a living, doing something you enjoy is much more fun than being stuck in a job where you don't get to make any decisions and do the same thing day after day. A college education will give you skills that you can take anywhere (reading, writing, analytical thinking, public speaking, etc) so that no matter what you choose to do in life you will have skills that employers want, which means opportunities. An employer can train you how to use their computer system, flip burgers etc. What they can't teach you is how to problem solve, be creative, and communicate your knowledge so that it is useful to other people.
College is also the most amazing experience if you go away from home and learn to be independent. You will learn so much outside of the classroom and make friends that may be your best friends for life. You won't "get it" until you live it, but later in life you are likely to regret that you didn't take advantage of this opportunity when you were young. I know a lot of people in that boat.

It really depends on what you're looking for. An education can happen in different ways. If you're looking to enter a specified field of work college is a good way to study and learn about what you want to do like nursing, engineering or becoming an attorney. If you're not sure what you want college may help you find your path, maybe in a liberal arts school of some sort. It can work on other levels too however. Maybe you'd benefit from living on your own with peers your own age instead of being at your parents place. It could teach you how to fend for yourself, socialize, network and communicate with others. All good traits for any type of business job. There's no doubt you could end up wasting a lot of money if you go simply looking to party and end up back at home after a year with nothing to show for it, but in my opinion college was the best experience I've had so far in my life thanks to the people I met, the friendships I made, and the non-classroom skills that I learned. (30 years old now)

Teach you how to learn and network with people. It comes handy when you enter the real world. It helps you get better jobs and keep them. Hypothetically speaking anyway.

Most jobs beyond union labor or McDee's won't hire you unless you actually have a degree.
