The magician can't make anything vanish. The magician can use trained skills to make something appear like it has vanished. To the untrained audience, the object appears to have vanished.

Well, the key is to focus the audiences' eyes AWAY from where the "vanishee" actually goes !!
You can have them go thru a trap-door under the stage, into a hidden compartment inside the illusion, OR blend in with a large group of "assistants" as Kacky's link describes.
I won't REVEAL any specific illusions... BUT, in any illusion, look for a brightly contrasting or mirrored horizontal line... that line is there to direct your eyes to seeing NOTHING below it .
Now also realize that most Magicians Assistants are young flexible women or men (dancers)... who can fold themselves into a 2x4x1 foot space with ease.
