It's more involved than that.

If you think the work was the best you can do and you were really trying to do stuff to please others, you probably have good reason to be upset - you will have demonstrated that you are not able to do what you want.

On the other hand, if you believe you could have done better work or if you weren't particularly interested in being popular, then there is no reason to be upset by criticism of any kind - you could have avoided it if you wanted to.

You are probably right in observing that someone who is insecure is more likely to be made upset, though - they are less likely to believe that they could have done better and more likely to want public approval in spite of their own believed shortcomings.

Still, it does seem plausible for a very secure person to still be put off by such things. Most professional writers that I'm familiar with learn to take criticism in stride simply because they know all too well how much they can learn and how difficult it is at times to produce something that is pleasing to EVERYBODY. So it goes.

Probably not, most people realize that other people have differing opinions/morals. Maybe if you thought you gave a GREAT answer and you received nothing but thumbs-downs, then maybe. But most of my thumbs-downs were because I said something controversial, mean, or not well researched. Don't take it personally, not everyone will agree with you. You're still a good person. Maybe. I don't really know you, you could be evil. See, there? That last comment? That could earn me a thumbs-down.

any child can gain the right to rate your answer if it wipes food all over it's face for fun often enough in the P&S section.

Any fool can get top contributor by empting the contents of its adult nappy onto the keyboard 500 times in the same section.

don't sweat it - if you change a single opinion for the better you change the opinion of the world. screw arbitrary ratings -

find validity in touching hearts and minds.

You can't take them personally....the person who thumbs down is projecting THEIR own reality....not yours.....try not to get upset. There are always going to be people who thumbs down, why give them the satisfaction of annoying you?

no, you never know, the person that rated your answer a thumbs down might be the biggest idiot and only doing that because they have nothing better to do, at least that is what I think when i see one on one of my answers...because of course, like you, I am always right!!!

thumbs down means a person does not agree with the question.

No hard feelings!

Nope.

People like to be right and not proven or attempt to be proven wrong. Just give your answer or opinion and be done with it.

It is the secure person who would take it personally due to ego or pride.... the insecure one would unfortunately take it seriously and ruin him/herself further!!
