In my humble opinion, the following rank among the worst Oscar best picture winners:
1. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
2. American Beauty (1999)
3. She Done Him Wrong (1933)

All of the above - Titanic was just a complete stitch up, ludicrous. The Oscars are just a back slapping self congratulatory ego fest. Zeta Jones won a best actress - without any shenanigans from her hubby I suppose, yeah right.
They give them $30,000 worth of goodies - who pays for that?

I thought Shakespeare in Love was a horrid movie, actually. However, I agree that The English Patient should not have won that year, but I'm not surprised Titanic won (although I didn't like that either).

Annie Hall, 1977.
I love Diane Keaton, but the movie did not deserve the Oscar. I am sorry.

Brokeback Mountain. This movie was a huge, steaming pile of disappointing filmmaking from a great director and good actors (not including Jake Gyllenhaal who, frankly, couldn't act if his life depended on it).
Runners up: Titanic and Gladiator.

...how about that gawd-awful 1976 remake of "King Kong"?? However in the world, did THAT stinkeroo of a movie tie with the sci-fi classic "Logan's Run, that year, with the award for best special effects, is beyond me...
...what about best original song for 1978?? Granted, Donna Summer's hit song , "Last Dance", was exactly that...a great hit song; however, to win the best original song award, for being featured in that excruciating unfunny disco-inspired film, "Thank God It's Friday"....well, I don't EVEN want to go there, as far as commentary, except to say that the film is undeserved of the attention...
