I expressed my thought that the "arsonist" should be burned to the stake in my answers to questions posed by other members. As other members expressed, this was a Capital Crime. I just saw on MSNBC, it was a child, a young boy playing with matches. My view on the punishment is changed, what is your opinion now?

I will have to extend this question regarding the questions of illegals, and terrorists putting children up to it.

My opinion has not changed. The boy needs to be punished, and severely. The parents need to be held financially accountable for the loss of homes, businesses, etc. I hope the book gets tossed at all of them.

We need to know more than has been said about it. I think they released this information to divert many people who were screaming for blood.
My first fact on this matter would be is this a citizen or is this an illegal alien? IF it is an illegal alien, (as I have heard), then they need to call in Homeland Security, and this should be the bestr reason in the world to remove all illegal aliens from America. (This is probably why we do not hear of it).
Curiousity wins again, so I must ask: would it make a difference to you if it were an illegal alien who did this?
Also, could it be a terrorist activity? We assume the concept of a child makes it an innocent act, however the insurgents are using children as suicide bombers. Why not have several children do this with matches? I am not saying this is what has happened, or that I have any knowledge that this is how it is. What I am saying is this was rated by firefighters as someone who knew what they were doing to create a huge wildfire. The person and the tools make it alright?

I think this highlights the danger of rushing to judgements and at the same time, calling for the harshest possible punishments. This is most likely to happen when the crime is especially horrible and when it has led to a loss of lives. It can make it very difficult for a really fair trial and can affect police investigations. In a number of such cases innocent people have been sentenced to death.

My opinion has changed as well.

What good is it going to do to put a small child behind bars or impose a criminal decision upon him by a court of law?

Sounds like the child needs professional help and his parents should be on the hook to finance it as long as the court deems necessary so that he turns out to be a good citizen as an adult.

I'm sure some homeowners are going to be looking at that boy's parents to cough up some dough (through lawsuits) to rebuild their homes, as well.
