Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy in the first 20 weeks. About 15 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and more than 80 percent of these losses happen before 12 weeks. After the 12th week of gestation, the risk of miscarriage decreases dramatically.
Since the cause of most miscarriages is due to chromosomal abnormalities, there is not much that can be done to prevent them. One vital step is to get as healthy as you can before conceiving to provide a healthy atmosphere for conception to occur.
Exercise regularly
Eat healthy
Manage stress
Keep weight within healthy limits
Take folic acid daily
Do not smoke
Once you find out that you are pregnant, again the goal is to be as healthy as possible, to provide a healthy environment for your baby to grow in:
Keep your abdomen safe
Do not smoke or be around smoke
Do not drink alcohol
Check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications
Limit or eliminate caffeine
Avoid environmental hazards such as radiation, infectious disease and x-rays
Avoid contact sports or activities that have risk of injury

MOST common is before 8 weeks. But, they still commonly happen until end of the first trimester. Miscarriage rate drops to about 1% at the end of the first trimester... so you aren't really considered "in the clear" until 12-13 weeks. Hang in there. :)

The first trimester is the most common time. It's actually why they say not to announce the pregnancy until after that point. While you aren't ever "safe" from miscarriages, it's safe to return to your regular routine after 3 months.
