when I read an essay, I was confused about the phrase pre se. thank you?

the assay is about law.

The phrase could also have been "pro se." With respect to law this means that you do not have attorney; you are acting as your own attorney and representing yourself.

Maybe it was a typo for "per se."

"per se"- Latin-it means "by itself"
