You normally have a AFP test to detect any genetic abnormalities . It's a simple blood test. If you haven't got it yet, you probably will on your next visit.
An alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) blood test checks the level of AFP in a pregnant woman's blood. AFP is a substance made in the liver of a unborn baby (fetus). The amount of AFP in the blood of a pregnant woman can help see whether the baby may have such problems as spina bifida and anencephaly. An AFP test can also be done as part of a screening test to find other chromosomal problems, such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21) or Edward syndrome (trisomy 18). An AFP test can find an omphalocele, a congenital problem in which some of the baby's intestines stick out through the belly wall.

There is a test they can take in the early stages of your pregnancy. I don't think that the dr. can tell by an ultra sound if your baby is going to have downs symdrom though. You'll just have to wait til the baby is born, as far as I know. Sorry I wasn't more helpful.

How many weeks are you? Like someone else said, at around 20 weeks, you have the option to get a blood test to see if there is a risk of down syndrome. Also, they can sometimes tell through ultrasounds if the child has any physical abnormalities, especially through 3d or 4d scans.

They have a pretty good idea from sonograms if the baby has any "soft signs" for Downs or other problems. They check the fluid at the back of the neck. If it is higher than their normal range that is considered a "soft sign" that can be a red flag for Downs. If they don't seem concerned then I wouldn't worry if I were you.

They will do a blood test around 20 weeks that will test for downs and other problems the baby may encounter.

how far a long are you? When I was 17 weeks they did blood work on me that should tell them the risk of any defects. They can tell by ultrasound if the baby has downs so if they didn't say anything your baby should be fine. =)

they can be alarmed if the babys eyes measure a certain way.. but usually the only way to tell is with the blood test. I refused that test anyway, because of all the false positives that it has
